SELLING DOWN UNDER: Accommodation is upgraded, June/July 2006

Now under new management, Kangaroo Island Wilderness Resort has undergone changes, and has become Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat. The property retains its key drawcards, which are its location at the entry to Flinders Chase National Park and its setting, nestled among the wilderness.

Changes have come in the form of a new restaurant, raising the standard of food on Kangaroo Island. Afresco dining in a courtyard setting has also been introduced where guests can see wallabies and possums make their way through the property throughout the night.

Room changes have been made with existing 4-star rooms upgraded with new furnishings and furniture. An all-suite apartment wing has been developed for longer stays, while 3-star rooms remain an option for guests.

THE SUN-HERALD: Opulence meets nature by Jimmy Thomson, November 26, 2006

And while families can find their own levels of accommodation, there are options for those with more money to spend on life's little luxuries. For mid-range budgets, the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, right at the gateway to the Flinders Chase National Park near the Hanson Bay nocturnal wildlife trails, has a range of eco-friendly accommodation from $140 per night for a room in the Eco Lodge to $330 per night in the Wilderness Spa Suite.

It also has a restaurant with an adventurous menu and an extensive list of Kangaroo Island wines, which is good news considering it's miles from anywhere and night driving is not recommended (K.I. wildlife's only predator is the four-wheel-drive).

AUSTRALIAN WINE SELECTOR: Island by Jackie Macdonald, Summer 2007

Next on the list of sightings came at Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat where Tammar Wallabies emerge to feed at dusk. And the animals are not the only ones to find a tasty meal at this peaceful retreat. The restaurant, catering for in-house guets, provides a really enticing menu. For entree, I enjoyed the smoked salmon stack layered with snow pea sprouts, avacado, mild horseradish cream and pappadums. This was followed by a main of prok fillet wrapped in prosciutto on a bed of potato mash and sauteed cabbage with Dijon mustard sauce.

Five minutes down the road from the Retreat is Flinders Chase National Park. This unspoilt area on the western end of the island is home to not only an abundance of wildlife but also Remarkable Rocks - and they certainly are. Perched on the edge of a cliff, these ancient rocks have taken their shape over millions of years, making the 30 years of my life seem like a mere flash in time.

DELICIOUS: Kangaroo Island by Caroline McConnachie, October/November 2007

A change in ownership in 2005 gave this 43-hectare property, fringing Flinders Chase National Park, another lease of life. Out went the karoke bar and backpackers and in came a new restaurant for guests and enough harmony to lure back wallabies. Of the 32 refurbished rooms, courtyard suites are the pick of the bunch, however, rooms in the ex-hostel are budget-friendly and some self-contained. There aren't any restaurants nearby, but you can buy a BBQ pack or enjoy the retreat's Mod Oz cooking in the fairy-lit courtyard or indoors.

THE EDGE SINGAPORE: Adventures in Adelaide by Sunita Sue Leng, April 2007

Was that really a small kangaroo at the foot of my dining table? I couldn't be sure. Maybe I'd had one glass too many of that astonishingly good Cape d'Estaing Kangaroo Island Shiraz. "That little fella's a wallaby." said the the waitress as she casually tossed another encroaching ball of fur - otherwise known as a possum - from a chair onto the verandah.

The wallaby - part of the kangaroo family - sniffed the air tentatively. I looked down guiltily at my dinner plate where pink slices of kangaroo fillet sat, seared medium-rare and drizzled with a green peppercorn sauce. But the meat was surprisingly tender and delicious so I popped another slice into my mouth. And the vexed wallaby hopped off, looking elsewhere for night-time treats.

Wildlife is everywhere at the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, an eco-conscious, rustic yet well-furnished lodge with top-notch food, perched close to the Flinders Chase National Park, on the west coast of Kangaroo Island. Seven times the size of Singapore, as the brochures proudly proclaim, Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. It separated from the mainland some 9,000 years ago and lies 15km from the South Australian coast.
